Duarte Park

With familiar themes of machinery and abstract figures, talented artist Nercido Beltre presents a surrealist interpretation of Santo Domingo’s Duarte Park. In this mixed media painting, the park is dark and foreboding. A path separates the park’s familiar colonial architecture from large gears and axles. White figures pour in from an ethereal door, running and dancing on podiums along the pathway. Contrasted against their dim, empty surroundings, the brightness and liveliness of the figures gives them a nearly angelic quality. A figure in the front stands on the tallest podium, looking and pointing towards something unknown above, in likeness of the actual park’s statue of Juan Pablo Duarte.
