The Merchant

Clelia Genao skillfully painted this oil painting using spatula and brush. This ever so talented Dominican painter portrays “Machanta Cibaeña who works as a street vendor” as he rides his slate gray donkey through the streets with his wares, in baskets tied to the donkey’s sides. The blues in the street knows the merchant’s name by heart since he works daily without penitence to earn a trivial living. The white buildings with their red roofs, and the excellent trees with their green leaves watch him and wait for his arrival each day with great anticipation.
